KOREA 1/4 YANG 1898 Rare. BIG Character. High Grade, Rare A Version . 大韓 光武二年

$295.00

This coin is a Korean 1/4 Yang from the Korean Empire period, issued in 1898 (Year 2 of the Gwangmu era).

While many of these coins appear in copper-nickel, this specific design was used for both the 1/4 Yang (copper-nickel) and the much rarer 1 Yang (silver).

Identification

  • Country: Korea (Korean Empire)

  • Era: Gwangmu, Year 2 (光武二年)

  • Denomination: 1/4 Yang (indicated by the characters 두돈오푼 and the fraction 1/4)

  • Mintage Year: 1898

  • Design: * Obverse: Features two dragons facing each other, circling a "pearl of wisdom" (cintamani).

    • Reverse: The denomination in the center, surrounded by a wreath of plum blossoms (the royal emblem of the House of Yi) and a ribbon at the top.

    • Grade: This coin appears to be in About Uncirculated (AU) to Uncirculated (UNC) condition.

    • Details: The dragon scales are exceptionally sharp, and the plum blossom on the reverse retains nearly all its original high-point detail. There is significant "luster" (the original mint frost) visible in the recessed areas.

    • Observations: I don't see the heavy wear typical of circulated "VG" or "VF" examples. However, there are some light surface marks (bag marks) visible in the fields.
